The National Centre for the Performing Arts is an opera building in Beijing located immediately west of Tiananmen Square and the Great Hall of the People. Inside, it is divided into three major performance halls. It cost a total of 3.2 billion RMB to build, and this has caused some problems in its operations, particularly with operational costs and ticket prices.

Beijing Capital International Airport is the main international airport of Beijing and a central transportation hub for the People's Republic of China. It is the busiest airport in Asia and third busiest in the world. In 2008, it opened Terminal 3, which is currently the world's second largest airport terminal and the world's third largest building by area (formerly the largest).

Tiananmen Square is the largest public square in the world. It is located near the geographical center of Beijing and is the site of many historical movements. It is located immediately south of the Forbidden City. Built in 1651, it was enlarged to its current size in 1958. During the Boxer Rebellion, this is where foreign troops assembled their troops. In 1919, it was the site of the May Fourth Movement; it was also the site of the Tiananmen Square protests of 1979. It is also in front of this square that Mao Zedong announced the founding of the People's Republic of China following the Chinese Civil War. However, its most well-known event is the infamous Tiananmen Square Massacre of 1989, when the government ordered the brutal killings of students pushing for democracy. A few meters from the square is the site of the world famous "Tank Man" photograph.

The Great Hall of the People is located between Tiananmen Square and the National Centre for the Performing Arts. It is used mostly for government meetings and ceremonies by the People's Republic of China and the Communist Party of China, and is essentially their parliament building. Each province, autonomous region and special administrative region in the country has its own hall within the structure. The National People's Congress meets here as well.

The Beijing National Stadium, known commonly as the "Bird's Nest," was the site of the opening and closing ceremony for the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. It is located in the Olympic Park and cost US $423 million to build.

The Beijing National Aquatics Center, known commonly as the "Water Cube," was the site of the swimming events for the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. It is located in the Olympic Park and was the home of 25 new world records in swimming.

The Beijing Subway is the oldest and busiest subway system in Mainland China (and 6th busiest in the world) and second longest (after the Shanghai Metro). It was first proposed in 1953 and was built with help from the Soviet Union and East Germany. It started operations in 1969 and, like the Soviet Union, was built with both civilian and military uses in mind. After the Sino-Soviet split, Soviet experts withdrew from the project in the 1960s and the subway's development was halted almost completely due to other economic difficulties from the Great Leap Forward. In the next few decades, the system was plagued by (occasionally fatal) disasters from both natural and synthetic sources. However, in the 1990s, the system began to expand; in the years leading up to the 2008 Summer Olympics, it grew greatly in size as several lines were added. It currently has 9 lines and is planned to expand to 19 lines by 2015.

The Great Wall of China is a series of fortified walls that goes through northern China. It stretches for approximately 8800 kilometers (about 5500 miles) and was built around the 5th century BC to defend against nomadic tribes from central Asia. Construction on the wall was on and off depending on the time periods' threat levels.

The Forbidden City is located immediately north of Tiananmen Square and is the former palace of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It was built in the early 1400s and used for about 500 years by China's emperors; it was also the political center of the country. There are nearly a thousand buildings in the complex, and nobody was allowed to enter or leave the Forbidden City without express permission from the emperor. Currently, this is the world's largest surviving palace complex and is located in the center of the Beijing urban area.

The Temple of Heaven is a Taoist building complex, which served as the ceremonial ground for emperors from the Qing and Ming Dynasties to pray for a good harvest. Built in the early 1400s, every aspect of its construction was decided according to the alignment of the planets, the seasons and the hours in the day.

Jingshan Park is immediately north of the Forbidden City and overlooks it. It is centered around an artificial hill created by dirt excavated during the creation of the moat around the Forbidden City. The park is also the site of the suicide of China's last emperor.

The Summer Palace is a former royal palace that covers about 3 square kilometers, most of which is water in the form of a man-made lake called Kunming Lake. It was attacked twice, first by the Anglo-French in 1860 (when the Old Summer Palace was attacked simultaneously as well) and the second time during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900; it was rebuilt both times. It was the royal summer resort palace, hence its name. One of its principal features is the Long Corridor, which was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest corridor in the world.
